Once upon a time many years ago, I took it upon myself to give myself a haircut.

I was in the fifth grade in a catholic school in St. Paul. It was a cold winter day, Saturday, I think. I was watching something on television and sitting down with my back to the heating vent, in our living room. I’d have to say that me and our heating vents were best of pals. In winter, that was my safe warm place, I was always content there. In fact I would hog the heating vent in front of the television all winter.

My mother tried everything to get me out of this habit. One time she told me I’d get cancer if I kept this up. That worked for a couple of days and then back to the heating vent I’d go. She gave up, I’m 79 now, so the heating vent and I must have got along well in those early years.

Well back to my haircut story. The school pictures were to be taken on the coming Monday. So I went into our bathroom and closed the door. This was going to be a great haircut, I just knew it. My family would be so proud of me when I showed them my haircut.

So after I was through cutting my masterpiece I showed my family. They couldn’t stop laughing; I was mortified so I did not want to go to school on Monday and have all the students laugh at me. My parents said you cut it, and it’s time for you to learn a lesson from this.

I had to go to school and have my picture taken. Oh well I was just a silly kid, now I’m a crazy 79 year old, who still does stupid things.
